We can actually hear two voices in our heads. Our higher self telling us to get up and go for a walk, or paint a picture, or ring a friend, and our lower self telling us to stay in bed for another few minutes, don’t paint because you were never very good at school anyway, and not to ring your friend, because they’re probably busy at the moment.
The lower self tries to stop us from progressing. It’s as simple as that.
And the place that the lower self wants us to remain is … on the Earth plane.
Therefore, when we start on our spiritual paths in a proactive way, our self does everything it can to delay, deter and downright stop us!
I was reminded because of a student who came this weekend, she is working for Spirit and wants to progress more and more. When she started to talk about how she wishes to progress, she started choking. And I don’t mean just a little cough, she actually started to choke so that she could hardly breath, let alone talk!
How she handled it was like this. She stopped talking to me, and instead addressed her lower self, in no uncertain terms. “Stop it. I am allowed to talk about my spiritual progress.” She had to “talk” to her lower self a few times before the choking subsided. She told me that on occasions in the past she has choked so much that she’s turned blue.
This is the power that the self has to deter us. It is very crafty, powerful and cunning. It has access to our subconscious minds and knows all the little ways in which to trip us up – sometimes literally! Another friend fell and hurt his back on the morning of a new class – which stopped him from joining his new meditation group. And another fell down the stairs on the day he was to start teaching spiritual development! Their selves were trying to prevent them from progressing. But if you bandage up the injury and still get on with the job in hand, you will have come some way to conquer your self.
