Illusion

The illusion is the veil over our minds that stops us from realising the truth of the spiritual dimension. Hence the Earth plane being referred to as ‘an illusion'.

When we only live in the material world, and not of the spiritual world, we are deluding ourselves – living in the illusion.

We are spiritual beings. Each of us has a soul and the reason for us choosing this lifetime on Earth is to experience the things that happen to us with a view to learning and growing wiser from them.

Therefore, every person, every challenge, every thing needs to be seen as an opportunity to learn.

Take a moment now, take a breath and a step back to see what your current illusion is. What's the veil stopping you from seeing? What is stopping you from growing? Why is it stopping you? Be honest with yourself.

Buddhists realise what the illusion is when they find the happiness they're seeking through their studies, meditation and chanting practices. Then the veil is lifted and they find happiness and are able to deal with every day life in the knowledge that ‘ All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players:' [William Shakespeare.]

From Maitreya's teachings we learn to look at our lessons in every situation and try to learn from them. This has helped me to deal successfully with a family death, relationship breakdowns, major changes in my life and with distant wars and disaster in the world.

To help lift the veil and see the illusion, our challenge is to conquer our attachments. It's ok to have material things, to be wealthy, and of course to love others devotedly, but becoming attached to these things and people is harmful to our progress.

Learning to let go and see through the veil is our challenge. Letting go doesn't mean we don't love anymore, it just enables us to cope with what will inevitably happen with all of our relationships in the end, and it's better to learn to cope with this than to continually get upset, as we do living in the illusion.
