Don't watch the News!

If something makes you excited, agitated or depressed, you are not living with a balanced mind. Would you like to reach a stage where you can glide serenely through life without external things affecting you in such a way to upset your equilibrium?

Easier said than done? Yes, of course! But still achievable, if you want. And it doesn't lead to a boring life, but a happier life!

The main point of that last paragraph was “if you want to”, as every decision in life is based on our intent to do it. If you have the intent, the hard work of learning and training yourself to change can follow.

Buddhists have a wonderful way of “training the mind” but if you don't want to become a Buddhist, you can become aware of the following pointers as a spiritually-aware soul.

  1. Make your mind up that you want to achieve a calm mind. (For non-English speakers the phrase ‘make your mind up' literally means that you decide to do something and stick with it! A wonderful play on words!)

  2. It is easier to put external happenings out of your mind and learn to detach from them than personal things, so we'll focus on this today. The media blows incidents up out of all proportion and brings these negative things into our living rooms, via the TV and radio that we really don't need to aggravate us! The evening News usually contains all bad news and no good news, and all this does is serve to bring us down. The answer is: Don't watch it! Turn the TV off, and turn the radio off when the News broadcasts come on. You can always switch it back on in 5 minutes when you know they will have returned to playing music!

  3. Stop buying newspapers and trashy magazines. All you will read is, usually negative, gossip about the personal lives of celebrities who have nothing to do with your life, or read in great detail about how someone was raped, murdered or the machinations of our politicians! No, I'm not exaggerating! The news is deliberately bad and you don't need to know about it. The main thing to be concerned about in this lifetime is your life's lessons, and the goings on anywhere else do not concern you! Of course, send love and compassion to those caught in drought and tidal wave, and donate to charities to assist them, but don't get deeply involved in the detail of these depressing stories, because all it does is depress you.

A note here to say, no, this is not being selfish, but if your aim is to live a calm, loving and compassionate life, these are some of the tips to change.

  4. Lastly, don't waste time gossiping or passing comment on how others lead their lives (see Spiritual Laws under Teachings link). This has a negative effect on your state of mind too.

Try these little pointers for a while. You might think you can't exist without TV News or newspapers and magazines, but you will find that you can. You will still have things to talk about and you will notice a change for the better within yourself.
