Doubt: Where does it come from?

‘Doubt' is one of the many tools that the Self uses to keep us down. The Self is a cunning fellow and just when we're feeling things are going well, the Self will pop a ‘doubt' into our heads, or a worry or a fear or any other negative thought it can find to upset us.

“Oh, I don't think I'm very good at this,” or “I'll never get this right,” etc. The doubts are endless, as I'm sure you'll agree, and the Self knows all the ones that will upset you. And just when you've conquered one doubt, and are feeling rather good, the Self will pop up another one. It is a constant battle.

The Self is like a child and has to be taught how to behave. It has to be controlled and kindly bribed into not upsetting you. So talk to your Self (you can do this quietly in your head, so your friends won't think you're “mad”!) and ask it to leave you alone today. Tell your Self that if it behaves you will give it a treat later. And then, when it does, reward yourself with something you like – a glass of wine, some chocolate or icecream. The Self likes treats, and a little of what you fancy does you good!

The closer you get to your Higher Self, the further along the path you tread, you will need to be aware of your Self to ensure you find a balance between them. Learn to control the doubts that the Self throws at you, and you will become calmer as you become closer to the Ultimate Being.

So ... please don't doubt that you can make it! You can! Doubt is just one of the tools of the Self, and everything that the Higher Self does is perfect, and is obtainable!

If you remember that the Self is trying to stop you from reaching the peace you so desire, you can learn to watch out for its deceptions, and doubt is one deception it uses to trick us.
