I mean a feeling of joy and happiness all the time. A joy within that wells up and makes you laugh for no reason!
To get to a place of permanent happiness we have to start by looking at our lives to see what is making us unhappy, and get rid of those things.
We have to be HONEST with ourselves and herein lies the first stumbling block. Because we don't like to admit certain things to others, let alone to ourselves.
- I'm married so I should be happy
- I'm married to someone I love so I should stay in this marriage because that's how it should be
- I love X and I want to be with them forever, despite the relationship killing me
Some people will have stopped reading this by now as the truth hurts. If you're still reading and you want to find your true happiness, you may have noticed the word “should” in the above statements… ask yourself “who said I should?”
A few other old thoughts you might have
- I daren't change my job because of the salary and security it provides, even if I am really unhappy and have tried everything to put it right.
- My job was great until the new boss started, now it's awful, but I'm scared to leave
- I've lived in this house for 30 years and the children don't want me to move as they grew up here
- I haven't got a partner/good job/house – it's the same – you're attaching your happiness to external things.
Did you go on a shopping spree and get momentary happiness from a new pair of shoes?
SOLUTION
If you are able to let go of the things or the idea of the things that you believe “should” make you happy, develop a relationship with spirit/God/Jesus/your Higher Self and stand in your OWN POWER instead of relying on the above-mentioned partner, job or shoes to bring you temporary happiness, you will find happiness …. From within!
Yes, all the answers are within us.
Most people find that once they start to look into spirituality, they look for a teacher to help them on their path. I would be pleased to help you. Buddhists summarise the need for “Buddha, Dharma and Sangha” – meaning a teacher, spiritual texts and a community. I have certainly found the need for all three! I love to spend time with like-minded people to share, encourage and support each other.
Sometimes we feel trapped in our lives. Stuck in a rut, and feel alone. Using Maitreya's simple teachings, I can give you the skills to let go of your conditioned thinking and encourage you to find true happiness.
You might not be ready, and that's cool, but if you've read this far that's cool too!!
A young man came to spend the day with me recently and at the beginning of the day he felt his problems were insurmountable. By the time we said goodbye, he was full of optimism to make the changes to his behaviour and attitude that he'd heard about that day, and saw that they could help him if he put them into practice. It will, of course, be up to him to move forward, but I'll be at the end of the phone/ on email to support him. I stay in touch with students for as long as they want to. A few have become good friends.
